early hitchcock movie, recommended! not as elaborate as his later movies, but many innovative, funny and subtle scenes. :)

Just superb, watched it as a lad in a school that was half Harry Potter & half prison camp & was a superb day being allowed to watch such a wonderful movie. Story is great, acting not over the top. It is a must this one.... & what is in fact the 39 Steps?

This film is not actually a comedy. It is really the first Hitchcock classic mystery film. This was the first appearance of the Hitchcock theme of the innocent man chased by both the police and the bad guys, i.e., the innocent victim which Hitchcock would use several times during his career, as in North by Northwest. The movie is highlighted by the wonderful performance by later Oscar winner (Goodbye Mr. Chips) Robert Donat. Trivia: Robert Donat turned down Captain Blood, the part went to Errol Flynn and the rest is history. TepetLee
