Fury of Hercules

(La furia di Ercole - 1962) A distinctly average movie, but one of the better Hercules ones. There is nothing that bad about this, apart from a man in a gorilla suit and the lack lustre colour of this print. Conversely, there is not much to commend it either, though the general acting is acceptable and the lead played by Brad Harris is convincing enough. At just over an hour and a half, it does drag its heels along the way. After watching this though, I am convinced in this era of superhero movies and rebooted franchises that there is room for a successful Hercules movie(s) if it had a decent plot and pace, perhaps based around the mythical Labours of Hercules? Video 7 / Sound 8.

[1947] Roy Rogers (and Trigger) is a bit before my time but I was keen to find out more. Apparently this movie is one of his better ones, made even rarer by the fact it is also in colour as most of his later colour ones have been said to be tired re-treads of his earlier B&W movies, but I can't say for certain. What you get here is a lot of sing-song in between the action and comedy, so if you are familar with Cat Ballou/Paint Your Wagon, it is sort of in that vein, though that is as far as I will compare those movies. I didn't think that I was going to like this much, but I was pleasently suprised that the songs, though plentiful, were uplifting and fitted in the movie well. The action scenes were well executed as were the humour scenes, particulary when involving portly Sheriff Cookie Bullfincher [Andy Devine]. It was strange to me that the setting was the 1940's because there is a mixture of 1890's Wild West and {ahem} modern buses and cars. It might help if you imagine they are in a remote border town that hasn't changed much in 50 years, and perhaps this is the reason why Western fiction writer Lee Madison was keen to visit. Don't take this one seriously, folks. It is a feel good movie with a Western theme. Video 8 / Sound 8.

(1946) An above average crime thriller with a complex intertwined plot that is not too difficult to follow. When the deceased private eye / blackmailer Walter Bard ends up coasting to the foot of a police station in his car, an investigation by the stations Lieutenant Sam Carson begins. The prime suspect is mayoral candidate's daughter Janet Bradley (the very glamorous Carole Landis), but could it be Bard's estranged wife or her lover? There is one odd edit near the beginning that seemed to have missing frames, but this scene is shown later and again with missing but different frames. Perhaps this was 1940's B-movie budget splicing? Video 8 / sound 9. I had to look up to see whatever happened to Carole Landis, who appeared to be attractive and talented enough for a decent movie career and was sad to discover on her IMDB Bio, that at the age of 29 she commited suicide.
